Inkcarceration 2024

InkcarcerationInkcarceration is a huge festival that lasts for three days. It is held on the grounds of the Mansfield Prison, which many people may know was the prison used for the outdoor shots during the movie “Shawshank Redemption”. This three day festival hosts dozens of bands on three stages.
Breaking BenjaminCrystal bought the tickets months ago and we joined thousands of festival goers for music, food, and more. Some of the bands that we enjoyed seeing were Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, The Offspring, and Shinedown. Unfortunately Filter missed the festival and did not perform, because of the Cloudstrike outage that messed up quite a few flights.
Tour of the prisonOne of the amazing things we got to enjoy was a tour of the Mansfield Prison. It is unbelievable that they used to house over a thousand people in this prison and the size of the cells was so small and cramped. There is a tour that is more guided and includes mannequins and props to help the stories come alive and we are considering doing that.

Kent Fireworks

PattyThere was a rainstorm on July 4th in Akron. It came down hard and for almost the entire night, which made it so going downtown was not a good plan. The fireworks were probably cancelled. The backup plan was to take a much longer bike ride and enjoy the festivities in Kent.
FireworksEddy did not end up making the ride this year, but Patty went. This was Patty’s first time riding the Freedom Trail. This was also the first time going to Kent for 4th of July fireworks. It was a tradition for years going to downtown Akron, but even despite the rainstorm downtown Akron has certainly lost some of its charm since the year that the festivities were cancelled. This was all part of the Kent Heritage Festival that they do every year. It was a good time – there was food and music. The fireworks were visible from railroad tracks near Kent’s downtown area. Riding back to Akron it was necessary to have a bike light on for most of the trip – the Freedom Trail gets very dark at night.

Eclipse 2024

Crystal in near darknessThere was a lot of discussion about where to watch the eclipse this year. The two cities of Akron and Cleveland were in the direct path of the total solar eclipse, and so it would be a great view, but there were going to be a mass of people there. Ohio school districts shut down for what was normally a school day, so there would be entire families in a good many of the spots around a city to watch the eclipse.
A picture of the eclipseTo avoid this crowd was kind of a tricky problem, because the eclipse had a path and the best way to view it was to be as close to center as possible. Crystal had a solution – a rest stop off the freeway. This ended up being the perfect idea. There were picnic tables, restrooms, and there was plenty of parking. There were quite a few people who had the same idea, but it was not crowded. We already had the glasses from the partial solar eclipse we watched in Columbus several years ago. This was the last total eclipse that will be viewable from the United States until 2044.

Two Summer Bike Rides

Patty near the Wilbeth trailheadThe first ride I took was with Patty and the destination was just downtown Akron to grab lunch. It is a nice short ride and there are pink flowers growing along the towpath going north from where we live. None of us remember having seen these flowers before, and they are nice. If nothing else they add color to what is usually just greens and browns. We saw blue heron along the way and they seemed to be hiding in the shade. It has been a very warm summer.Eddy in front of the St. Helena II in Canal FultonThe bike ride with Eddy ended up being about 36 miles. It was to Canal Fulton and specifically to get what ended up being dinner. The Cherry Street Creamery is a place to get food and ice cream and it is located on the towpath. We actually intended to do this earlier this summer, but we kept putting it off. Maybe next year we will make this trip earlier and then again later.

The Sword in the Pump

Maybe it will return

This sword in the stone of sorts could be found next to the towpath and had probably been there for many years. I did not find a great deal of information on this particular piece of art on the internet, but it was something I tried to show everyone.

If you climbed on top of the pump to look at the sword you would see that it was actually made from tools, large bolts and screws, and other materials that were probably utilized in the construction of the pumps that created the manmade lake.

Unfortunately, the pump is open now and the sword is gone. May it return someday.

Pokemon Go Adventures

This needs to be an ongoing series of pictures. I have been playing Pokemon Go for a couple years now and I have gotten a few people to play the game. It is about time to start taking pictures and remembering some of these times we went out and played. This picture was taken in downtown Akron using the camera in Pokemon Go, which allows you to go ahead and place one of your Pokemon in the picture. It is a cute feature.
