The Sword in the Pump

Maybe it will return

This sword in the stone of sorts could be found next to the towpath and had probably been there for many years. I did not find a great deal of information on this particular piece of art on the internet, but it was something I tried to show everyone.

If you climbed on top of the pump to look at the sword you would see that it was actually made from tools, large bolts and screws, and other materials that were probably utilized in the construction of the pumps that created the manmade lake.

Unfortunately, the pump is open now and the sword is gone. May it return someday.

Cedar Point 2014

The Cedar Point trip started at approximately 7 O’clock on a Friday morning. The trip was originally supposed to be a bit of a surprise, but each of the kids managed to find out before Friday. That is when showers had to be taken and everyone had to be up in order to eat breakfast and get ready. With the car packed it was on to the driving. About an hour and a half later we arrived in Sandusky ready to park and get to the rides at Cedar Point.

We rode just about every roller coaster in the park. Patty’s favorite was the Raptor. At the end of the day she actually got to sit in the front and she said that it was probably the first time she had ever been in the front seat of a roller coaster. Michelle did not really have a favorite roller coaster, but she insisted on going on the bumper cars four times. Michelle also made sure to pet every animal in the petting zoo. Eddy’s favorite was the Millennium Force. I did not go on Wicked Twister, but Michelle said that was the only ride that scared Eddy.

We all went on the Millennium Force at the end of the day and it really is kind of amazing being that high and looking over Lake Erie. We never had more than an hours wait all day, which was really cool. One of the highlights was Patty and Eddy giving each other a high five on the Gemini. Sometimes it is the older rides where you can still have the most fun. The weather held up nicely, despite there being a chance of storms all day. The kids really kept it fun and ran around the park all day. We managed to stay until the park closed at Midnight and we all had a really great time. The last thing we did was get shirts at the gift shop. I was a great day. The pictures are on the pictures page.

Computer Problems

I do not usually update with news about how the computers in the house are doing, but this was sort of a special occasion. Almost every computer in the house actually needed some sort of repair in the past few weeks. Honestly, this is not the last time I will be working on some of these computers. This will all inevitably repeat itself sooner or later. Hopefully next time it will not all happen so close together.

The first computer that started causing a problem was the Dell in the den that the kids and Grandma use. That computer has become increasingly loud over time and it was time to clean it out. That meant alcohol wipes and dismantling it, to the best of my ability, in order to remove as much junk from inside the case as I could. The computer is running much quieter, but I also found out that my daughter can not connect her iPod to the computer unless I (the only one with an administrator account that has access to install things) updates iTunes. I was not aware of this. While I was taking it apart anyway I replaced some screwed and generally made sure everything was well connected.

I actually had to get some information off of an IDE hard drive, and so I went downstairs to retrieve the old Dell, because I do not have an external case with IDE anymore. That computer has really been falling apart and I had no intention on keeping it for very long anyway, but it sort of made that decision for me. The computer was making a loud buzzing noise and it was not acting at all like it should. I opened up the case and it turned out that the clips on the heatsink were broken. I do not know if someone moved this computer very roughly at one point when they were cleaning the basement, but needless to say this is not worth repairing and that computer is now in the trash.

Next I was accepted into the Age of Empires Online beta. That is not the problem though. The problem is that the Dell laptop does not seem to want to run this game very well, so I installed it on the computer I build downstairs. Playing the game for any extended period of time resulted in motherboard beeps. Looked up the beeps, because every motherboard has beeps that mean something and the best thing is to consult the manual. I did not have the manual, but I do have internet access. The error was for overheating. That did not make sense to me, so I took the computer apart. All the fans were running and there was barely any dust in the case. When I went to move the heatsink and fan on the processor I noticed that it was not very secure. Turns out one of the plastic clips broke, which is actually on searching the internet a very common complaint. A heatsink and fan that are not making a good connection to a processor will definitely cause overheating.

I was going to order a new one online, but it turned out that a friend of mine had an extra one. He had actually bought the same processor as me at one point, but he does not use stock heatsink and fans. Honestly I should have searched out another option, since this problem could very well occurring again, but right now free seems to be the better choice. I do not plan on moving this computer around any time soon, so hopefully everything holds together. Heatsink paste, installed the heatsink and fan, and I have played games and left the computer running. I even installed a program that shows the current temperature of the processor cores and everything is running very smoothly.

The Acer had an update that fixed an issue with the HDMI. I have always sort of wanted to stream things straight from the computer to the TV, so I tried to update the bios. Big mistake apparently, because it ended up bricking the motherboard. Ordered a new motherboard and an external floppy drive. The floppy drive did not work (Windows + B to enter into a bios recovery mode, but that was apparently gone), so I installed the new motherboard. Everything was not going well, so I opted (while I was at it right) to format the hard drive and reinstall Windows Vista, which is what the Acer came with.

Now I have never liked Windows Vista, but the final straw was when the computer installed 100 updates, restarted, and the screen said that the updates did not configure correctly, so the Acer was in the process of reverting the changes. Having waited well over an hour for the updates to finish in the first place this was completely unacceptable. Got some help from a friend, new “unofficial” bios, and Windows 7 later the computer is running much better. I still have a screw that I do not know where it goes though, and that sort of concerns me. I will have to take a look and figure out where that goes.

The only thing left to do for right now is get ink for the Canon Pixma MP250. I am sure that will not be a problem at all, it is just more money and a little more time that I will be spending this month on something computer related.

Tow Path Bike Ride

This was the first time I have rode on the Tow Path this year. There was a bit of a sprinkle this morning, but I looked up the weather on a website with an animated map and I could see that the rain was not going to come. Sure enough we did not get rained on during our bike trip. Deanna and I started in Akron and went to Peninsula. Now that she has had her heart fixed she is able to ride her bike a whole lot further. The trip was good and we had Nate come and pick us up at The Winking Lizard.

Update: Crackdown 2 and Where Have I Been?

I went to my doctor’s appointment, and this was the last one. There are no other options for me to pursue really as nobody will do anything for my hand. I have been told now that since the bone is at the angle it is it is rubbing against the soft tissue in my hand and that is why I still have discomfort in my hand, the pinky finger doesn’t want to go out straight, and I have swelling. The doctor actually said that if something had been done earlier and he eluded to the angle it is at. The only thing I can do now is possibly talk to a lawyer concerning the mistreatment I received. I do not know if I am going to take that route, but it is really my only option now that I have been told that having a lump on top of my hand and limited motion is just how it is now.

Crackdown 2 and Where Have I Been?

You will have to excuse the quality of some of the pictures that I have been putting up lately. I have been trying to use my HTC Evo to take some pictures, since it is very easy to take the pictures and then upload them directly to the FTP, Facebook, or even Twitter. I think that for some applications the phone will work, but I will still be carrying around my camera for important things. To answer the question of where I have been I actually broke my hand this summer. The fifth metacarpal, which is the bone behind the pinky finger, on my right hand. I have been spending a great deal of time going to doctor’s appointments trying to find a doctor that will actually fix my hand. Since I was telling all the doctor’s I wanted it “set” and that is not actually the correct terminology I have been wasting a lot of time this summer. I have not been very impressed with how I have been treated by the medical community. The bone was at a 45 degree angle and something should have been done, but nothing has been done and it has healed quite strangely. It has discouraged me from doing a great many things this summer, even though I was capable.

The only thing I have been able to do apparently is play Xbox 360, take short bike rides, and work on home repairs. I managed to get all 1000 gamerscore points in Crackdown 2 with Nate and another friend of ours. It is the first time that we have all done that together. To just put the rest of what is going on in a list without any details: We have the basement almost completely cleaned out, so we are almost ready to start dismantling the downstairs shower and ripping out the drywall. I am still having a problem with my teaching license. The upstairs bathroom is done. Eddy’s window broke and I am not completely sure how to go about fixing that. I have one more doctor’s appointment for my hand and I am hoping this will be the doctor that will do something. That is just about it.

Ready to Ride

Went on my first bike ride of the year. It was nothing special really. I do not have the tenacity to put the bike rack back on the trunk of the car, load up the bikes, and drive down to see what the Tow Path looks like in the middle of an Ohio March, which may I remind you there is still snow visible on the ground in parking lots and other assorted places that do not get a great deal of light. Eddy, Deanna, and I all went down to the store and to the park. Patty was at a friends house, so she could not have gone. I wish I knew what the name of that store, but I really do not.

I checked everyone’s air pressure. I have some tuning to do on the brakes on both of their bikes. Eddy’s bike I am not so concerned with, since I believe I will be replacing that this year. I do not feel his bike is the right size for him any longer. I sprayed their chains and gears with WD-40 and I think that took care of some of the rust. I did not take any pictures, but honestly all I would have been taking pictures of is the neighborhood that I see outside my door every day.

I can not find any of the water bottles I bought last year, and I am beginning to think that even if I were to find them I would not necessarily want them any longer. I still need to get thinner profile tires for my bike, because the whole mountain bike tire thing really isn’t going to work for this street/path riding.
