Honors Night

Patty made honor roll for the majority of her Sophomore year at Archbishop High School, so she was invited to and received an award at Honors Night. Honors Night is a night of recognizing all the achievements of students at Archbishop Hoban and especially the seniors who are receiving grants and awards on their way to college. If Patty continues to do well this will be something to attend for the next few years. Her mother and I were in attendance, along with her sister and Grandmother. It was great seeing her win an award.

Patty Plays Lacrosse

Patty is playing Lacrosse for Hoban. This is their inaugural year for girls lacrosse. Many of the students on the team are playing the game for the first time and while Patty is starting as a goalie for the JV team there are no promises she will end the year there. Many of the teams they will play this year have been playing for years. These pictures were taken at the first scrimmage for the girls JV lacrosse team. They have already played a few games and Patty has already won her first game. There will be more pictures to follow showing the home and away jersey.

Lunches

Lunches are a constant problem, because there is only so much that can be packed and with the long days that the kids have at school they are often very hungry when they get home. Assorted granola bars, packing more, and what not has not seem to alleviate the problem. They insist that they should receive money for snacks after school, but that is just chips and soda out of the machine. The search for the perfect lunch continues.

Winter Festival

The Winter Festival at Archbishop Hoban is a two day event where they showcase the musical and artistic talent of the students. Patty plays violin in the orchestra and so she performed on the same day as the choir and the guitar group. Patty also had art that was displayed for a clay piece that she did.

Fortunately for Patty her mother was able to attend the event in the absense of any other family members. Her mother also graciously provided all the pictures. This was the second Winter Festival that Patty performed in and just as last time it was fun and went well. Buying strings when they break and practice in her room is apparently paying off as she is becoming quite accomplished at playing the violin.

Hoban Freshman Football 2012

The football season is officially over. This was James’ first year playing football and he had a great time. The coaches said he worked very hard and made a great deal of progress throughout the year. I was able to attend every game, his sister, Patty, was able to attend most of the games, and his Grandmother and Mother managed to make it out to one game each. The Archbishop Hoban Freshman football team went 10-0 and with that record became the first undefeated football team in the school’s long history. All the pictures that were taken throughout the year can be found on the pictures page.

Firestone Scrimmage

Eddy had his first scrimmage with the Archbishop Hoban Freshman football team. It was an unseasonably cold morning in August. There was a fairly steady rain and the temperatures did not get out of the 60’s. He is pictured here lined up as a wide receiver. He is learning a lot and will get more time in to play once he gets a better grasp on the game. This is his first year playing and he is doing a great job showing up for all the practices and following directions.

Mock Trial

Patty went to the Cuyahoga County Courthouse in downtown Cleveland, right next to the lake, on Friday to participate in Mock Trial. She was the Bailiff and Time Keeper for Archbishop Hoban and if she listens and pays attention to the other students who got to be the prosecutor and defense lawyer then maybe she will get to do that next year.

She recieved a pin and they won the meeting, so there will be another meeting at some point in the future. She should be receiving another pin at that time.

Patty Playing Violin

Today was the Archbishop Hoban Winter Fine Arts Festival. The talents displayed tonight were the String and Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, and for the first year ever the Guitar Ensemble. Patty plays violin with the string and wind ensemble who have songs dedicated to just them and other songs where they play with the choir singing.

The performances went from 7pm till almost 8:30 with a 15 minute intermission. It was great to be there and I got to meet Patty’s music teacher, Mr. Kelvington. It is times like this that I am glad that Patty’s Grandmother encouraged these children to pick an instrument in grade school.

Dead Man Walking

I remember posting something about how when Eddy and Patty were in the play last year, at St. Paul’s, that I thought for sure that Patty would attempt to do some acting this year at Archbishop Hoban High School. As it turns out, she is involved in the play, but not in the way I expected. She is playing the violin in the orchestra. The play is “Dead Man Walking” and she is playing in the orchestra on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

New School Year

The new school year is upon us and the kids are excited and mostly tired. Eddy started 8th grade at St. Paul, which means that he will be going through Confirmation this year. He has already attended the first Confirmation function, which was a bowling outing in Cuyahoga Falls. He is looking to get involved in after school activities or sports this year. He has been riding his bike to school, which is really cool. It really is a big help only having to drive one kid to school, at least until the weather turns.

Patty started the new school year as a freshman at Archbishop Hoban High School. She has a new uniform. She has a great deal of homework. She is meeting a great many new people and entering into a much larger school than St. Paul. She is looking at joining clubs and after school activities. She has to sell some raffle tickets and get 10 hours of community service. It is a lot of work. She is learning all about time management.
