Summer is Near

Tomorrow is the midterm for the Maps and Map Reading class I’m taking this summer. I have no idea how I’m going to do that, because up till now it’s been working with groups on worksheet after worksheet and it is hard to imagine sitting there completing a test by myself. I’m not even sure we were supposed to be working together on the worksheets, it’s just that the entire back row of the classroom is education majors, and one history major, and we all sort of think the same way about these types of assignments, which is to say, that we all think we should do it together.

Maps and Map Reading is a lot of math, but the professor is pretty cool about it. When it comes to miles she only wants us to sort of round up or down depending on where it falls on the mile marker on the map key. This really helps when you are trying to do the area for a building on a map, because instead of reaching for the ruler, which is my first instinct, you can just put the dots on the edge of a piece of paper and then line it up with the key and just sort of guess.

Tomorrow is also the last day of school for the kids and then they are on to summer break. I think they are happy about that. The weather has been pretty bad this week, but I’m sure it is going to warm up soon and they are going to get a taste of summer weather. I still have to get their grades and then it is on to a few months without having to worry about waking them up in the morning.

Last Day

Today is the last day of the Spring semester for the University of Akron. I do not have my grades yet, but I am sure that if I check in on that next week they will all be there. I am really excited to see how I did considering the number of classes I took. I am heading into the Summer semester in another week, so I only get a short break here before I’m heading off to classes again.

Random

The wireless gaming adapter that I’ve been playing with doesn’t seem to like holding an IP for more than a day, so I’ve gotten the suggestion that I should go with a static IP on the Xbox 360, because that might help. I am not sure that the problem isn’t really that I’m using a virtual network on my router, because the adapter only does WEP and my network was WPA. I was told that WPA is better security. I will have to wait and see if this fixes the problem. Right now I can’t suggest this setup to Renee, because while I incorrectly said she bought an Xbox 360 when in fact she exchanged one she got for her birthday and got one with a hard drive, she needs a wireless solution, but this isn’t really stable enough for right now. Lucky for me her television is basically rubbish so she isn’t in any real rush for this solution.

The kids went to the doctor’s for their physicals and everything seems to be fine. We are still waiting for some routine tests to come back, but so far the only problem is the kids are slightly overweight. I was already aware of this fact though, so there wasn’t any surprises that have come of this physical yet. I believe the kids have been losing weight, and when the school year is over and they can spend more time riding their bikes, which I still have to find a bike for Patty, then I’m sure this problem will resolve itself. The Easter candy isn’t helping the situation any in the very present. Hopefully they slim down enough to make it easier to fit them for uniforms for the new school year.

I have the Praxis II content and PLT test on the 25th and I’ve been reading some books to help me get prepared for them. I picked up two AP history books at the Akron public library, because to my surprise the University of Akron library did not have any world history books that would be of value to me. I need the history books for the content part, which is about 130 multiple choice questions that can be pulled from world, American, geography, economics, and politics. I have made it to about the 15th century for the world history, but I feel that the next four centuries are going to be more important to me. On the PLT side of things I’ve made it through about a dozen people who have contributed theories that have shaped the modern education system in the United States, but I really have to go back through and read them all again and finish these books. These tests could not have come at a worst time, as the semester is winding down and I have a lot of assignments due in all my other classes.

Speaking of assignments what I have due is a final draft of my Historical Methods paper, which I got the rough draft back today and there are quite a few corrections I have to make to get a better grade. I need to put together another paper for my Advanced Teaching Instructions class, along with a Curriculum Connections paper, a rough draft of the unit plan, and I have to finish the observation hours I’ve been doing at North High School. I have a big paper and a possible presentation coming due for Measurements and Evaluation, which I sadly have not even started on. I have to finish up about 6 online quizzes for Family Financial Management and start thinking about the final project that is due on finals week. I have the final paper and a presentation due in History and Film, which while that is actually not that difficult is still more work piled on. I would like to finish all these books I got for the Praxis II tests.

I have so many assignments and appointments lately that I forced myself to learn how to use the appointments and tasks feature on my phone. I was keeping all these things written down in a notebook, but I need a more constant and ready reminder of what needs done. It wasn’t hard to learn and I feel more confident about keeping track of what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. I don’t have any reminders or anything set, because I’m constantly in there adding or checking something so I don’t think I’m going to forget what’s due next.

Everywhere I go anymore it smells like fresh mulch. This is both a blessing and a curse. Sure everything looks better and eventually the smell settles down and it is fine, but in the very present it is a very pungent smell. Sometimes I feel as though I’m carrying the smell around me if I walk too close to it.

Time Warner Cable will be out to fix my cable for a 3rd time in a month. I know 3rd time is a charm, but I’m really just hoping they get it right this time. I don’t even know what went wrong this time. The cable box isn’t working and now the kids are telling me that some of the higher channels are scrambled on their televisions. This problem seems to be brand new. I don’t know what’s going on. I even talked to Rick and while he probably knows what the problem is there isn’t anything I can actually do myself to fix it.

My Grandma helped me with dinner tonight and she made the pork chops better than I do. I learned how to do it from my Dad and the recipe is dip them in Italian dressing, then breadcrumbs, then in the oven for an hour at 350. Grandma did them with egg instead of Italian dressing, and I have to say that I like it better that way. I’ll have to start doing that.

Friends

I ran into some friends of mine from my days at Best Buy at the University of Akron today. They are doing quite well and I was glad to see it. When you don’t see people for a long time you hate to see them again and them to have fallen onto hard times or something. They are planning on graduating this semester, which means that they will be looking for a job and most likely not staying here in Ohio. I just want to be the first to say that Ohio will surely be a poorer place to live without them here.

Spring ’09

This is the first day of the Spring semester at the University of Akron. I will be going to my classes, as well as a few classes I am not registered for. Lets all keep our fingers crossed that the professors whose classes I show up to this week find it in their hearts to let me stay in their class. It’s a heck of a lot of classes (16 credit hours total if I get into these two classes), but I sort of need them.

Probably update this on Friday when I know better what’s going on.

Finals Week

Today is probably the worst day of my finals. This is a 2 1/2 hour final that will surely test my ability to put a great deal of information on paper. I’m not thrilled about the final, but it’s not for lack of trying to prepare. I’ve been studying and organizing my notes. I had to send the notes to someone who missed a class and wanted to have my notes.

Tuesday nothing is going on, which is good. Wednesday I have a take home final to turn in. Thursday I have a take home final and a paper to turn in. It’s a busy week, but after Thursday I’m finally done and this semester will be behind me. I’ll be happier about it all after I get my grades. I’m sure they are going to be good, but I like to have that in black and white.

College Update

I know I haven’t said a whole lot about what has been going on at the University of Akron, but I thought I’d take a moment to update a few things before I head into finals week.

My observation hours are over.  I have to get the teachers signature, write a paper, and type up the log of what I did during the hours I was observing.  I’m going to continue to show up to referee the flag football, but that’s coming to a close as well, so my whole commitment to this thing is basically over.  A freshmen actually was a bit disappointed that they won’t be seeing me any longer, because I am not taking a class that requires observation hours next semester.

I have a mock teach to do next week and then I am done with the Classroom Management class.  It was a pretty great class, and I’m glad I took it.

I have to write a paper, teach a class on strategies for getting students to read in social studies, and finish up an interview with a circulum director for another class.  That and a final.  It’s going to be a busy two weeks for that class.  Really coming down to the wire.

My politics class is coming to a close with a final, and I feel really confident about it.  I enjoy classes that are laid out in a certain way, and this professor had that flow.  It was easy to take notes, it was easy to figure out exactly what he expected, and so I feel good about this class.

The only final I’m actually concerned about is the Reading in Secondary Schools final, because I have been having a hard time studying for that class.  It seems on the midterm I focused on things that ended up being really irrelevant.  That class has given me a ton of ideas and I’m glad I took it, but it would be nice to get a good grade as well.

I guess the next time I’ll be posting about what I’m doing with my classes will be after finals.

Referee

I did a much better job this time. The problem was the game wasn’t nearly as good. There really isn’t a mercy rule, what we do is if you go up by 3 scores then you are only allowed 6 players (normally 8 players) and you only get 3 downs on offense (and you have to punt, no option), but that wasn’t enough for the game to turn into something ugly. The teacher who put this all together he warned me. He said “it’s going to be a massacre”. I sort of knew he’d be right. When it got to be 47 to 8 both teams decided it was over. Seemed like a good decision to me.

That’s another hour and a half towards my 50!

Referee

I got to play referee for a flag football game today. I’m getting hours in on my required observation hours by doing it. It was a lot of fun. I got to run around outside and hang out with the kids that I usually only get to see inside a classroom. It’s a whole new experience from what I’ve been doing. Education is fun in ways you never think about.

I did a pretty sloppy job, but the whole coed league just got put together in a few weeks, so next time we will have enough cones, a stop watch, and maybe even some real flags. I’ll probably get better at it as well.
