Ice Skating

Deanna really loves ice skating, but I have not really been up for it this summer. She decided it would be something fun to do with the kids and the only thing I asked was that if she went that she should take pictures. She found an ice skating rink in North Canton that is reasonably priced. They have actually gone twice as of this post, but I do not have pictures of the second time they went. I will have to go and take the pictures myself if I want more and better pictures.

The kids are still getting used to the skates. They had to try the figure skates and the hockey skates to see the difference. As of right now I still do not believe that Eddy has decided between skates. Michelle is actually the only one who knows how to skate, because apparently she used to go quite a bit when she was younger. Patty and Eddy do not have this advantage, since this was actually the first time they have gone. They have gone rollerskating a great many times, but despite people saying that the concepts are similar and almost insinuating interchangeable I have personally found that ice skating is far more difficult, and apparently that was the same experience Patty and Eddy had since they fell down several times.

The important thing is as always that they had fun and that they enjoyed the new experience. I would say they most certainly did, since they want to go back. I am sure that we will try and make this something we can all do as a family. I have not really felt like going back since the first time I went last year, but I am sure to give it another try. Maybe if the kids really get into this we can buy them their own skates.

Ice Skating

Today I went ice skating, with Mariana, at the Kent Ice Arena. In a bit of a turn of irony I had actually never been there, and this is of course ironic, because I am a Kent State University graduate. It was the first time I had ever gone ice skating.

The first hurdle was to pick out the right skates. I tried the figure skating pair, but the hard plastic and the way they fit caused me to roll my ankle. This of course makes it both impossible to skate and painful. We had to take a break anyway, since the Zamboni had to make it’s rounds so I got the hockey pair. While these fit much looser they actually managed to make it far easier, which was originally the complete opposite of how I thought an ice skate should fit. I got the hang of it fairly well, which is to say I only fell once, and it was really fun.

Mariana and I went to Panera’s afterward and it’s always nice to get some hot soup on a day like today. It was a typical north east Ohio day and the rain and the general gloom of gray skies and cold made it a good idea.

Then it was on to her house for a little Christmas gift exchange. I got her a statue of a dragon, because she had mentioned that she liked dragons. Her gift to me though was without a doubt one of the coolest gifts that I have gotten in years. She got me the book “The Zen of Zombie” and it’s hilarious and with the word “zen” in the title there is some deeper meaning to the whole thing. I’ve already started reading it, and it is surely a book I want to finish.
