Science Project

Patty had a project for science class where she had to make a car powered by a mousetrap. Using the provided mousetrap she worked pretty independently, because while I had promised to help I ended up working quite a bit on my own homework for the last couple weeks. The day came that it was due and the mousetrap car she had constructed did not quite work.

For one thing the axles were held on with staples that were going to fall out of the board. The staple idea itself wasn’t that bad, and honestly I’d probably try that again if I had to make another car. Second she had the rear axle flush against the board, which did not leave room to wind a string around it. See, the way she designed it the string would go from the mousetrap to the rear axle and then when wound up and the trap set the car would go forward. I fixed these flaws.

Some people asked me if I thought what I did was “cheating” and to be honest I don’t think so. Would Patty have eventually worked out details such as needing to move the axle away from the body of the car? Would she have seen the error in the way she used the staples and had to have invented an alternative? Sure. With time both of these things would have readily been made obvious to her and she would have worked those out. To answer the question then I don’t think it was cheating. I did not really do that much.

Weekend Visit

Michelle came over for the weekend. The kids and I finally had a chance to give her the presents we got her for Christmas. She was very pleased with the Guitar Hero: Aerosmith game with the guitar, because apparently that was on her wish list and she did not get it from anyone else. I unfortunately did not get a picture of her with her presents, because I wasn’t actually home when she opened them. The kids were just so excited to have her open the gifts finally that they did not wait till I got home.

It was nice having her out for the weekend. It has been a long time. Hopefully she will be able to come out again soon.

Movie

Kristy and I took the kids to see Coraline. It was actually Kristy who got the whole thing going and I just kind of tagged along. I have to say that it’s been hard for me to get motivated to do things on the weekend when I’ve often been staying up till the late hours of the night to get homework done.

The projection was messed up, so the screen was set about a foot (I’m really just making that measurement up since I have no idea of the actual size of the screen or anything) too low and even after I complained about it the matter was not resolved. This became really obvious, because at one point during the movie something is written at the bottom of the screen and we could not see it. We got three free tickets because of it, and that is good enough for me. The movie was still enjoyable and the children seemed to enjoy it a great deal.

Report Cards

The report cards are in for the children. I know they can do better, and while I feel as though that is almost cliche, I really do believe that they can. I have to evaluate how I can better guide them to utilize their time more effectively in getting all their assignments done. It’s certainly a balancing act as always as we try and balance having a clean room, having the homework complete, and doing whatever else it is that they need to get done for that day.

New Pictures

I went ahead and put the pictures up for Christmas 2008 here in our house in Akron. It’s a great set of pictures. I managed to get Eddy, Patty, and even one of Grandma. I probably should have taken more, but I was exhausted and I think I did a pretty decent job.

I still have one more picture to add, and that is when Michelle finally opens her gift that is still here waiting.

Merry Christmas

Christmas is here and we managed to get through it. The kids got just about everything they asked for, and I think from their reactions opening their presents that they made out pretty well. This was the first Christmas that I insisted that they change out of their pajamas and into some decent clothes for the picture, which I’ll probably put up soon.

We were invited over to my sister Becky’s house for dinner. Her husband and her two kids were there, so it was a house full with us all there. We exchanged gifts and had a really great dinner and we will be getting the pictures from them, and I’ll probably put some of them up here as well.

It was a good Christmas. I’m really thankful for how everything turned out here at the end of the year. I’m really grateful for making it through another year without too many problems. Things are good. I hope everything is going well for everyone else.

Christmas Concert

I went to the last concert of the year. It was at Firestone elementary where Eddy was playing the viola. It was a lot shorter than last year. They had a play, a choir, and the band. I noticed quite a few differences from the presentation at the elementary school as opposed to my first year at the middle school.

For one the elementary school has individual performances by children. Some kids get to showcase their talent, where at the middle school it’s solely a collective effort. They also are a bit less politically correct at the elementary school, which I don’t mind at all, but they call it a Christmas concert at the elementary and a Winter concert at the middle school. The songs are different, the presentation is different, and that’s the last one I’ll see.

I don’t know if they were recording the presentation at the elementary school. I found out that they are waiting until Friday to play the recording of the Winter concert that I went to on Tuesday.

Winter Concert

I went to the Roswell Kent middle school Winter Concert to see Patty play violin. I have to say it was an enjoyable experience. There were performances from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade choir, band, and orchestra. They made an announcement that the entire performance was going to be recorded, so I would imagine that today the kids could go to school, or at least sometime in the future, and hear how they played.

We had to get Patty a white blouse and we wanted to get her a black skirt, but we couldn’t find one, so we ended up getting her black slacks. Patty did well and I hope she continues to take the lessons throughout the 7th and 8th grade as well.

My Sister

My sister Becky came out and brought her kids. It was fun having them over. Becky and I caught up on things, like how I have finals and how she’ll never have finals again. What she’s doing with the whole attorney thing. It’s nice to know what people are doing.

We talked while the kids watched Toy Story. We fixed macaroni and cheese and hot dogs for dinner. She helped me put away the dishes and reminded me that I haven’t used the steamer she let me borrow to take down the border in the living room. I’m going to do it, I’ve just been preoccupied.
